My Top 5 Narcolepsy and Sleep Podcasts

Until the pandemic occurred in 2020, I had never listened to a podcast, but after I’d finished a 3-month-long binge of Netflix, I suddenly found myself with nothing to watch.

That’s when I discovered the world of podcasting.

My 5 favorite narcolepsy and sleep podcasts

Podcasts are an incredible way of not only finding entertainment but also giving us new opportunities to be informed and connect with others.

I thought I would share my top 5 favourite narcolepsy and sleep health podcasts and hopefully offer a new tool that might provide you with unique and helpful information.

1. The Project Sleep Podcast

Hosted by Julie Flygare, this new podcast has quickly become a favourite of mine. It aims to improve public health by educating individuals about the importance of sleep health, sleep equity, and sleep disorders.

I must admit that, as a member of the World Narcolepsy Day Committee and a Rising Voices of Narcolepsy Speaker, I could be considered slightly biased in my opinion. In all honesty, I am a huge fan of everything Project Sleep does for our community. Though I am probably biased, it doesn’t take away from the fact that this is a great podcast!

2. Sleep Junkies

If you have an interest in sleep research, this is definitely the podcast for you! It provides incredible insight into such a wide range of topics related to every single aspect of sleep.

From topics such as the science of music and sleep and the truth about melatonin to theories about dreams, this podcast has unique and extremely interesting content.

3. Narcolepsy 360

If you’re looking for a podcast that gives a voice to patients, caregivers, doctors, and more, this is the best podcast to listen to.

For me, my favourite episodes are the personal stories told by people from our community. Many of us don’t know anyone else with narcolepsy, and this can make us feel incredibly alone in our struggles.

Listening to these different experiences told by real people like myself really helps me when I’m feeling particularly down or overwhelmed. It’s as though I’m listening to a friend.

4. In the Know: A Narcolepsy Mini Podcast

Although this is only a "mini" podcast, I loved listening to the amazing advice these speakers had to offer! The subjects approached in this mini podcast are very typical, everyday issues that we face on a daily basis. They talk about subjects like navigating the holidays and advocating for yourself in the workplace, your personal life, and with healthcare providers.

It is an extremely relatable and helpful podcast, so if you haven’t yet listened, I highly recommend doing so!

5. Sleep Science Podcast

This is another great podcast for those who love to understand anything sleep-related. This podcast is incredibly insightful and engaging. As someone who is seriously fascinated by topics such as dreams, insomnia, and memory, I am always waiting to find out what the next episode will be about!

Aside from providing some truly engrossing information, it also shares intriguing conversations with professionals like Professor Björn Rasch. In one of my favourite episodes, Professor Rasch discusses a process called Targeted Memory Reactivation (TMR) and how this process can be used to help overcome problems like arachnophobia (a phobia I personally wrestle with). This podcast will surely never bore you!
