The Benefits of Using a Pill Box Organizer

For as long as I’ve known myself, I’ve been aware that my memory is not the best. I’m not sure if this has anything to do with my narcolepsy (it may not), but I have always struggled to remember even the most important tasks.

When I was diagnosed with narcolepsy at the age of 28, it was the first time in my life that I had to take medication on a daily basis. For me, this was quite a daunting prospect at the time, having to take pills on a daily basis for the rest of my life.

I have been diagnosed for over 5 years now, and one of my biggest struggles has been to routinely take my medication at the right times, every single day!

A helpful tool in managing life with narcolepsy

In all honesty, it hasn’t been working very well until recently, and the consequences of that have unfortunately led to some bad incidents (mostly cataplexy -related).

I have been fortunate, however, to have made so many friends in the narcolepsy community that have helped me along the way. This has been especially important in helping me to discover new methods and techniques that help to manage a life with narcolepsy.

How a pill box organizer can help

One of my favourite (and surprisingly simple) techniques has been the use of a pill box organizer.
I cannot overstate enough how utterly life-changing this has been!

For years, I had heard a few friends mention using pill box organizers, but once the conversation was over, I almost immediately forgot about it. Luckily, by happenstance, I came across an online store that was selling them at a very good price, and I decided to buy one.

This was over 3 months ago. I haven’t missed a single pill.

I’ve come to realize that there are 3 main reasons why having a pill box can be so effective.

1. They are easy to organize

For me, the simple design of pill box organizers is a big reason why they are so easy to use. Though they do come in various designs, the main element is that they separate sections for days of the week and times of the day. This not only helps you to easily organize all of your medications for the entire week, but also serves as a way of reassuring yourself that you have actually taken your medication for that day.

2. They serve as a reminder

As I mentioned previously, my memory is not the best, and simply having this box on my bedside table is an instant reminder to take my medication as soon as I wake up and before I go to sleep. Every Sunday, I take 5 minutes to organise my medication for the week, and then I no longer have to worry about it.

3. They help me to take my medication correctly

I’ve also found that when I become ill or need to take any additional medication on top of my narcolepsy medication, it can become extremely confusing for me to take everything correctly. The pill box helps me to always take my medication correctly.

Taking my medication correctly makes a big difference

I am genuinely astounded by how something so simple and inexpensive has made such an incredible difference in my life. It probably sounds so ridiculous to most people, but I honestly didn’t realize how taking my medication correctly could actually have such an impact on my symptoms.

I highly recommend pill boxes to anyone who has the same struggles with their medication.
