Narcolepsy and terrible nightmares?

I have now got to the stage where I am actually frightened to fall asleep and I try my absolute best to fight sleep (which as all narcoleptics know is an extremely hard thing to do), I am scared to fall asleep due to the terrible realistic nightmares that I have more-or-less every time that I fall asleep.......... I wake up sweating..... I also talk in my sleep and sometimes have heated arguments with people in my nightmares - sometimes the talking/arguing etc wakes me up, sometimes it doesn't???? The nightmares are extremely frightening and I often dream very similar dreams over and over again!!!!! How many of us have these terrible nightmares and does anyone have any tips to stop or at least help with these terrible dreams....................

  1. Hi . Your fear of falling asleep is more than justified. Have you ever talked with your doctor about it? Many people with nightmares related to narcolepsy benefit from imagery rehearsal therapy. It's a way of taking control of your dreams and either changing the outcome or reassuring yourself, even in the midst of it, that it's not real. Here is an article about it from the National Institutes of Health: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4521653/#:~:text=Imagery%20rehearsal%20therapy%20is%20used,sleep%20paralysis%20and%20hypnagogic%20hallucinations. I hope this helps and that your get both rest and relief. Thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. ................ Manny thanks for the information that you sent to me about the terrible frightening nightmares that I have about 98% of the times that I am asleep, it's so nice to know that there is actually some information about the issue..... I cannot, however open the 'article' (that you sent a link to) about 'imagery rehearsal therapy' from the National Institute of Health......... could you please open the article and send it to me in an 'open - ready to read' format).... if you could do this I would be truly grateful.... kind regards - Patricia Mackenzie

    2. Sure, Patricia! I sent you a private message. If you can't read it in the message box, you can try copying and pasting it into a Word document. You can try this link as well: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4521653/.
