Have you felt stigma because of your narcolepsy?

Sometimes narcolepsy can have stigma that comes with it; some might confuse it with laziness or lack of time management for sleep.

What stigma's have you experienced because of your narcolepsy?

  1. can some one tell me the best meds for narcolepsy am tired of everone tell me to go to the Clark cent for meds that put alot of weight on me and still dont work so they can say they fixed me please help if you no what meds will work for me

    1. Hi . Your question will get more exposure to the community if you create a forum post. Here is a link if you are interested: https://narcolepsy.sleep-disorders.net/forums. In the meantime, here is an article about prescription medications that can at least tell you what is out there: https://narcolepsy.sleep-disorders.net/medications. I hope this helps. 2. I've had friends who've called me lazy, and that I could be trying harder. Someday I'm ok, and have to take a nap or rest. Narcolepsy has made me someone who's considered as being "untrustworthy." Because I crash when I should be out doing something I've said I was going to do. I have other sleep disorders... Strange things that I do while trying to be productive or sleep.

    1. I don't believe there are anymore doctors in my area that specialize in sleep disorders. I have looked before.

    2. Have you considered traveling to find a good doctor? I have a friend who sees a neurologist three states away. She had to visit in-person once a year, but the remainder of her appointments are virtual with any testing done at her local hospital. I know that's not always possible for everyone though. I wish you had more options close by. - Lori (Team Member)

  3. That my sleep hygiene is poor.

    1. And as I've pointed out to them, they share all of this "normal people wisdom" when I am at my lowest, saying things like this narcolepsy is a walking death. They tell me that they hate me being in that state. I would be nicer if they said that they hate that narcolepsy gets me into that state.

    2. It sure would. It would be even nicer if they asked how they could help. - Lori (Team Member)

  4. I constantly experience stigma! Most people think I am lazy, unstructured, or that my life is just a mess.
