Supplements or herbal remedies to treat narcolepsy

So first thing first I don't know if this is appropriate if I share my experiences on consuming supplements or herbal remedies here. But I am curious to find out whether someone else here have taken some supplements to "treat" narcolepsy.

At the first I tried caffeine, maybe like anyone else here. But I don't want to get addicted to caffeine and somehow it upsets my stomach. Also I get that caffeine helps to decrease the EDS but I still find myself unable to focus or having a brain-fog like condition throughout the day. Then I found some herbal nootropics supplements that people says can boost or support brain health. I tried consuming Lion's Mane mushroom powder to my breakfast for 1/2 tablespoon for three days (until yesterday) and note that I feel... Better? Especially when I combine caffeinated drink with Lion's Mane, most of the EDS symptom and cataplexy dissapear and my focus increase dramatically. I almost forget that I got narcolepsy in the day but then the symptom came again at night. But if I only consume Lion's Mane without caffeine, I feel sleepy throguhout the day, but it just not as severe and my focus is still sharp. And interestingly I don't get many vivid or disturbing dreams at the night I consume Lion's Mane mushroom. However, ofc this is still preliminary since I also want to check whether there is some allergy reaction or side effect from it. I still want to try it for several weeks or months, on and off, to see the differences.

Anyone else have the similar experience? Thank you 😀

  1. I'm so glad you mentioned this!! I've tried it as well but not with caffeine and it made me more sleepy and not less. I believe (maybe off on this but not sure) that "Nootropics" , or adaptogens, help in what ways you need with what effect they provide. I read that Lion's Mane helps some people to have more energy and for others to help with REM sleep...having narcolepsy I could see how this could definitely hit different for us!! I'll try it with caffeine...thank you.

    1. How awesome, ! I wish I had read this before I responded to your comment in another thread. You are always welcome to share what helps. We only ask that you not give medical advice or share commercial links. You have not done any of that. This post is fine. Lion's Mane has so many potential benefits and many of them are nerve/brain-related. So it makes sense that it might help with cataplexy and cognition. Have you talked with your doctor about your success with it? Please keep us posted if you don't mind. I would love to hear whether it continues to help with no negative side effects and I am sure others would as well. - Lori (Team Member)

      1. thank you for your response, Lori! I finally have talked this with my doctor but he doesn't comment about that 😓maybe ethics, but he always said that if you find a herbal remedies that work, then just do it. I consume the Lion's Mane on and off since I don't want to mix it with stimulant. And that's because my doctor doesn't ordered me to consume stimulant everyday. But aside to that, after integrating Lion's Mane into my diet, I can reduce the stimulant dose. But of course I don't know whether this is because the symptom is improved for a while or it is because of Lion's Mane. At least, I don't experience any side effect from it so far 😀

      2. Hi . That is probably as close as to approval as you will get from your doctor. Doctors have to worry about malpractice insurance rates and lawsuits. If your doctor encourages you to use Lion's Mane and something goes wrong, the doctor could be sued and the insurance rates would skyrocket since it is not an FDA approved treatment. It's crazy what they have to pay and how that drives their hourly rates up. I hope it continues to help. What a great discovery for you. - Lori (Team Member)
