Experience With Alcohol.
It's kind of a strange question, but I've been curious ever since I was diagnosed about the effect that alcohol and the amount consumed have on people with Narcolepsy, especially Type One.
What effect does it have on your symptoms? What are comparisons to your experiences between caffeine and alcohol?
I used to enjoy a good glass of oak aged red wine but the after effects (draggin' my butt around for two days) are not worth it. My hubby used to say that I was a cheap date because I rarely could even finish that one glass before I was asleep. Haven't had any alcohol in over 15 years now. Don't miss it, don't need it. YMMV.
Unfortunately, I’ve found that alcohol 100% worsens my cataplexy (type 1 - severe). That doesn’t stop me from having a few cocktails with friends/family, because that’s a safe environment, but I can’t deny the negative effect.
Idk any effects outside of the immediate worsening/triggering cataplexy, but it wouldn’t surprise me if there are some.

. I'm glad you limit alcohol to times when you are with people you trust. Does it always lead to cataplexy attacks or are there times when it doesn't happen? Thanks for joining the conversation. Warmly, Lori (Team Member) there have been times when it hasn’t, but there’s also the factor of my cataplexy being pretty regular (as in daily) so “times when it doesn’t happen” isn’t a thing haha
Caffeine has some positive effects for me (mild/moderate type 1), but I don't ever really get wired. It does disrupt my sleep if taken too late in the day.
I can really only tolerate 2-3 drinks, and by 3 I am pretty drunk and tired. I rarely drink as a result, and only one drink, even then.
I’m going out on a limb here but i find I can consume a much larger amount of alcohol without feeling a “buzz” most probably due to my stimulants. But I am even more tired the next day. I don’t shy away from a glass of wine or a cocktail but any extremes will bite me in the butt in the day following.
