Experience With Alcohol.

It's kind of a strange question, but I've been curious ever since I was diagnosed about the effect that alcohol and the amount consumed have on people with Narcolepsy, especially Type One.

What effect does it have on your symptoms? What are comparisons to your experiences between caffeine and alcohol?

  1. I’m going out on a limb here but i find I can consume a much larger amount of alcohol without feeling a “buzz” most probably due to my stimulants. But I am even more tired the next day. I don’t shy away from a glass of wine or a cocktail but any extremes will bite me in the butt in the day following.

    1. That is a great question, . While you wait for responses from others, I have a few articles to share with you that might help. This one is about mixing stimulants with alcohol: https://narcolepsy.sleep-disorders.net/living/mixing-alcohol-and-stimulants. This article offers safety tips for a night out that involves alcohol: https://narcolepsy.sleep-disorders.net/living/tips-nightlife-safety. Finally, this is an article about sleep hygiene that includes a discussion of caffeine: https://narcolepsy.sleep-disorders.net/sleep-hygiene. Many peoplw with narcolepsy depend on caffeine to keep them awake during the day, but it seems just as many say it doesn't help. What has your experience been? Wishing you the best. - Lori (Team Member)
