When experiencing cataplexy, what’s the best thing someone can do to help?

How can people support you when experiencing a cataplexy attack? Share your suggestions below!

  1. Sing them Happy songs! Let them know you care and you're there and that you're a pleasant distraction 😀 lol that's what I would do! Im goofy

    1. 1> Be there to ensure we don't fall and get hurt, especially when sitting on a chair or bed.
2> Don't ask questions, more than 50% of the time we can't answer.
3> Don't call an ambulance (unless we've hurt ourselves).

4> Don't stare, and if it occurs in a public place be a 'shield' so others don't stare either.

      1. That's a really good one nº 4! It can be so embarrassing in itself that we really do not need to pile on with people staring or asking what happened and if we're ok. Thanks so much for sharing! Best wishes, Iris xxxx

    2. No I don’t want a glass of water ! After 30 years of having cataplexy, don’t talk to me while I’m having episode, I cannot answer you not even with with a thumbs up,just make sure my head is elevated and please don’t stare . My cataplexy comes with hallucinations, and my eyes remain closed and although all of that is happening, I can still hear you , I guess it’s a hard thing to deal with if you have no idea what’s going on , and your watching on, but just keep the head up is all I ask.

      1. guess the only thing someone can do, is to sing Happy songs for you? 😀 😀 that's what I would totally do if I had a friend who had cataplexy 😀

    3. Leave me alone

      1. Hi , I'm sure others would definitely agree that being left alone is the best way to support them. Thanks for sharing! Best, Allison (Team Member)
