Filing for Disability

Are there any tips or advice you can give to those who want to file for disability benefits? Have you been through the process and how was it?

  1. Thank you for your question! Gabrielle linked my article on this topic in the discussion thread. I hope it can provide some help for you. The majority of the work for me was gathering all of the doctor's documents and sending them to Social Security. Don't be discouraged if you get denied the first few times. I was denied twice and had to get a lawyer to defend my case, which is typical especially for invisible disabilities like Narcolepsy. It took me about 2 years to get approved. My lawyer is not paid by me, they get a portion of my social security backpay (which starts accruing on the first day I applied). Make sure to read all documents about retainers from disability lawyers to ensure that the amounts are fair. Wish you the best of luck! Warmly, Tatiana (narcolepsy.sleep-disorders.net Team Member)

    1. I can't say I have any experience with filing for disability, but I know wrote an article about a disability hearing earlier this year. Perhaps she could be of assistance to you, or know someone else who could help?
