Electric Buzzing Feeling When Slipping Into Sleep

Hello everyone,

I have been diagnosed with Narcolepsy since 2018, and it has been a journey in so many ways.

One strange symptom that I experience has me wondering if others out there with Narcolepsy experience it as well, and how often.

Occasionally when drifting off to sleep (usually after I have already been asleep but wake up) I have this overwhelming sensation of sinking, while simultaneously feeling like my whole body is buzzing. It is almost as though an electric current is running through me and pulling me into some kind of very strange sensations. It isn't necessarily painful, but extremely uncomfortable and often times quite frightening.

I will try so hard to pull myself out of it, but it will take several repeat instances before I am able to fully get out of it - forcing myself to get up and walk around. If I weren't to get up and walk around, I would continue a cycle of trying to bring myself out of the experience, but then fall right back into it as it feels almost impossible to "wake out of it".

I know this may seem like a very strange and unusual question, but the truth is, it is a very strange and unusable experience to have; and I am just curious if anyone else out there experiences anything like this, and if so, how often and what you do to help yourself through it or have it not happen.

Thank you all for your time in reading and responding to this.

  1. Hi Lori,

Thank you so much for your response. I have not talked to my doctor regarding this, as I am not sure how to be honest.

I was hoping posting to this forum would help me connect with others who may be experiencing the same thing, just to gain any insight on their experiences and how they cope with it.

If anyone has or you have any other resources or suggestions please let me know.

    Thank you

    1. Hi . Is your sleep specialist a neurologist? If so, your doctor should be familiar with that buzzing sensation and should understand what you are talking about when you mention it. That buzzing or zapping feeling is usually nerve-related and can come with several different neurological disorders. It can also be a symptom of stress or a side effect of medication. You might also want to ask your pharmacist if any medication you are taking might cause it.
I would describe it just as you did here. If the thought of discussing it in person makes you nervous, you can even copy what you've written, minus the references to this forum, and paste it as a question into the practice's portal.
I doubt you are alone in this experience and I hope you get input from others. It almost sounds like you are fighting sleep paralysis when this happens. - Lori (Team Member)

  2. Hi . How scary. I couldn't find anything in our archives, but I remember someone sharing similar information once. So, I have a feeling you're not alone. Have you ever talked with your doctor about the buzzing sensation? I hope you get input from others in the community. Even if you can't really control it, I imagine it would help to know you're not the only one experiencing this. Warmly, Lori (Team Member)
