Paralysis or cataplexy

I’ve been taking medication and been diagnosed for narcolepsy for the last year now. The medications are helping almost all symptoms however I still find myself waking up violently shaking and extremely anxious in the mornings aswell as being unable to move because of it. I’ve mentioned this to my sleep specialist but they haven’t done anything about it yet. I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what you’ve tried to help get up and going earlier in the mornings without violently shaking.

  1. That must be scary, . Are you taking Xyrem or Xywav? Both of those medications can cause parasomnia, sleep paralysis, sleepwalking, sleep talking and sleep terrors. Here is an article that includes a discussion of the side effects: https://narcolepsy.sleep-disorders.net/clinical/switching-xyrem-xywav.
Doctors are often less aware of potential side effects of medications than they should be. It might help to check the side effects of all the medications you are taking and bring printouts to your doctor for any drugs that might cause the symptoms you are experiencing. You can also talk to your pharmacists about whether the combination of your medications is causing your symptoms.
From my own experience, it seems that sometimes doctors shrug things off because they don't even know where to start. Maybe this kind of research will light a fire under your doctor and lead to answers. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. I’m on Sunosi and slow release Adderall during the day aswell a Ambien at night. I’m not positive on the side effects of ambient but I don’t think the other two are causing it. It’s also been happening since before I was taking medication.
