Service Dog

I recently got diagnosed with Narcolepsy type 2 and still fall asleep through 2 daily stimulants. I've done some research and was just wondering if anyone had a narcolepsy service dog, what the process was to do that, and if it was something worth doing. Did it improve your quality of life? Did it help you manage your symptoms?

  1. my daughter has trained her dog to help her. This dog goes everywhere. During the 2 weeks she was in the hospital, her dog was down and sad. She is home now, and he is up running around. They finally sent her up because the meds they put her on do not work, so if someone could tell a med that will let her brain turn off, they put her on Risperidone 1 mg at night and a shot of 100mg, which is not working, she is still up all night when she tries to sleep she can't stay a sleep so if anyone know of a night time med please tell me thank you

    1. Xyrem is actually a sedation treatment for narcolepsy . I personally hated it. It was a date rape drug and now it’s only prescribed through jazz pharmaceuticals to force an 8 hour sleep nightly. They’re highly secured in who they give it to. But if you want her to sleep that’ll do it. The possible side affects are terrifying but the stats show it’s the most affective drug for narcolepsy.

  2. Hi friend I actually got a emotional support animal but a cat. My cat does NOT help me lmao he literally sleeps with me BUT he do slap me awake after about 20 minutes of napping so I guess that counts? But u do qualify for a emotional support animal I literally got one from my sleep doctor u can ask yours to write u one

    1. HI . I hope you find a few people here who've had experience with service dogs. While you wait for response, here is an article from our editorial team that might answer some of your question: https://narcolepsy.sleep-disorders.net/service-dog. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)
