Type 1 or Type 2?

I began experiencing symptoms of Narcolepsy the summer before 9th grade so about 14 years old. I think the first thing that happened related to Narcolepsy which of course I had no idea of such a disorder and still didn't attach the incidence to Narcolepsy for years later. I was walking across the street in a apartment complex and then I was on the ground. It was so weird. It was a couple of months after that that I started having regular episodes of cataplexy starting with the muscles in my knees when I was afraid or upset then in my face, head neck (?) when I laughed. That was about 35 years ago. Today no noticable cataplexy at all. So do I have Type 1 or Type 2 Narcolepsy?

  1. My question was in reference to no longer having symptoms of cataplexy and whether or not this changed the type?

    1. Hi . We're not medical experts, so I would ask your neurologist or sleep specialist to be sure, but, as far as I know, if you were type 1 initially, you are still considered type 1 even if you are no longer experiencing cataplexy symptoms. Again, I would confirm that though with someone who has more medical knowledge. - Lori (Team Member)

  2. Hi . Narcolepsy with cataplexy is type 1. Here is an article that explains the types better than I can: https://narcolepsy.sleep-disorders.net/types. It must have been rough to experience attacks so young. Are you on a good management plan now? Wishing you the best. - Lori (Team Member)
